Huka Falls is just a 5-minute drive north of Lake Taupo, within Wairakei Park. This waterfall is one of the most visited waterfalls in New Zealand, and you have to be there yourself to understand why.

We arrived at the car park of Spa Thermal Park, where there were plenty of parking lots for free.

We followed the signboard and took a short walk along the riverside to the Otumuheke Hot Water Stream, just a few hundred meters away. It led us to the bridge that spans over the Otumuheke stream.

The trail veered away from the river at times, but this well-defined track always found its way back and remained close to the banks of the Waikato River.

The Huka Falls trail showcases stunning scenery, guiding us through native bush areas before reaching the iconic Huka Falls, New Zealand’s most visited natural attraction.

With each twist and turn, the sound of the falls grew louder at the end of the Huka Falls Walkway, building anticipation as we drew nearer. We know that we have arrived at the much anticipated Huka Falls.

3. Huka Falls: Nature’s breathtaking spectacle

The sight of Huka Falls was nothing short of breathtaking. There are viewing platforms where we can safely appreciate the grandeur of the falls. The lookout points provide the perfect angle to capture amazing photographs and immerse ourselves in the sheer magnificence of this natural wonder.

Huka Falls is a testament to the extraordinary grandeur of nature. This mesmerizing wonder owes its magnificence to the ceaseless river flow, which originates from Lake Taupō, the largest freshwater lake in Australasia.

A convenient option for those who prefer to admire the falls without embarking on a trail is to drive to the Huka Falls Car Park on Huka Falls Road. The falls are only within minutes of walk from this parking area.

The breathtaking display of cascading water results from the collision when the river hurtles toward the volcanic ledge.

The 100 meters width river dramatically narrows to 15 meters before plunging into a jaw-dropping gorge. With a staggering flow rate of approximately 220,000 liters per second, its powerful currents rush beneath a pedestrian bridge, leaving us in awe and speechless by its sheer beauty. If adventurous, try the walking track from Huka Falls to Aratiatia Dam.

4. Huka Falls Jet: A thrilling adventure on the Waikato River

Huka Falls Jet

We were drawn to a Huka Jet Boat carrying tourists as we marveled at the majestic Huka Falls. We learned that this thrilling 30-minute excursion offers a high-speed journey up the Waikato River, reaching astounding speeds of over 80 km/hour.

The Huka Falls Jet Boat ride promises an adrenaline-pumping experience as you zip along the river, surrounded by breathtaking scenery. It’s an opportunity to feel the rush of the wind against your face and the exhilaration of speed as you explore the mighty Waikato River, the longest river in New Zealand.
