Kuala Lumpur Butterfly Park is one of the well-known butterfly parks in the world. According to the park’s official website, the renowned international program Discovery Channel commented that of all the butterfly parks in the world, none could compare with this one. It houses more than 5000 butterflies over an area over 80,000 square feet,
I am somehow skeptical of this statement. I also feel a bit embarrassed that I have never been to this place, although I’ve stayed in Kuala Lumpur for more than 30 years.
With that in mind, I drove to the park before it is opened at 9 a.m., yearning to see more butterflies when they e are more active in the morning.
The entrance
There is a human-made garden in front of the entrance next to the car park.
When I purchased the ticket, I was notified that the tripod is not allowed in the park. I don’t know the exact reason, but for those who like photography, please take note.
The outdoor area
Once I walk down the stairs and pass through the blind, I was greeted by a beautiful garden.
It is ideal for family holidays. There were a few families with kids and babies.
The butterflies are fluttering around below a huge net. Nevertheless, most of them were flying high up close to the net. As a result, that wasn’t hundreds of butterflies surrounded me, as claimed by some of the visitors.
It was challenging to take video or images of the butterflies since they were continually moving around.

The scenery is Instagram worthy. The butterflies, flowers, water cascades, bridges, and ponds offer countless opportunities for portrait photography.
There is also a mini aquarium inside an underpass in the park.
The indoor area
The indoor area has an entirely different atmosphere, with an extensive collection of beetles and beautifully camouflaged insects and some creepy crawlies like scorpions and centipedes. Of course, they were safely kept in the glass display area.
The sample of bugs and insects are framed on the wall.
If you missed the opportunity to admire the butterflies, this is the place you can take a closer look at the sample of each species.
The souvenir store is located at the far end of the exhibition hall. The merchandise was quite touristy, which was expected.
I spent slightly more than one hour in the butterfly park. The exit is just next to the entrance.
Should you visit the KL Butterfly Park?
Is it worth visiting the KL Butterfly Park? It depends on your intention and expectation. It is an excellent place for family outings with young kids. It also has some stunning backdrops for portrait photography. It is definitive if you are a butterfly enthusiast.
But if you are coming with the expectation to see hundreds of butterflies, you may be disappointed if lady luck does not smile upon you.
