The Exchange TRX Kuala Lumpur- Comprehensive guide to visit the mall

The Exchange TRX

Marking its grand opening on the 29th of November, 2023, The Exchange TRX isn’t just the newest shopping complex in Kuala Lumpur but a distinctive landmark offering an unparalleled shopping and dining experience.

(Main Entrance)

I visited The Exchange TRX almost a month after its official opening because many shops were closed during the opening week. During my visit yesterday, around 80-90% of the shops in the new shopping complex were open and available for shoppers to explore.

It was a lovely Sunday with beautiful weather and fewer cars on the road. I arrived before 10:00 a.m., and ample parking was in the parking area. There are two underground basements (Basement 1 and Basement 2) for shoppers. I parked my car in Basement 2. All exits will take you to an elevator that will bring you to the Concourse Level immediately above the parking level.

1. The Concourse Level

Most shops were prepared for their morning opening when I visited the shopping complex. On the concourse level, there are numerous eateries available. The images I shared with you only represent a few options. In reality, you will have many other choices to explore.

Numerous exclusive eateries in the Exchange TRX are not found in other shopping centers in Kuala Lumpur. Hence, if you are looking for good food, the charm of the Exchange TRX will be irresistible.

The shopping complex has a user-friendly layout, with rows of shops running from one end to the other.

At the end of the concourse level is the Mercato supermarket, surrounded by various eateries, including the renowned local coffee shop, Oriental Kopi.

The Food Exchange is a modern food court that reimagines the traditional hawker scene. It offers a tempting array of local delicacies, which are sure to pique your curiosity and taste buds.

The opposite end of Merchato of this level is the exit to the MRT Station. Once you reach the exit, you must take the elevator down, and the counter and ticket-selling machine are there.  Please read the relevant section below for more information on how to get to the Exchange TRX.

The Lunar New Year is only a few weeks away, and the exhibition area on the concourse level has already been decorated accordingly.

2. The Ground Level

Above the concourse level is the Ground Level. Over here, there are many other outlets in addition to restaurants and cafes.

One of the notable shops is Gentle Monster. What attracted me was the yaks right at the shop entrance. Although they did not move around, they can move their head, blink their eyes, move their mouth, and swing their tails. Then, there was another single-eye monster creature at the far end, which blinked his eye occasionally. This is a South Korean sunglasses and optical glasses brand. The brand’s name reflects the duality within humans, representing both the gentle and the monster. The creature symbolizes the brand’s unique identity. The ‘monsters’ in the shops contribute to the otherworldly and intriguing atmosphere, making it a huge crowd puller of the complex.

The shopping complex’s primary entrance is located on this level. The vast tiled space provides a comfortable spot to unwind and appreciate the skyline.

From the main entrance of the shopping complex, I can either proceed directly to the ground level or take the stairs on the right. These stairs lead me to the Dining Terrace on Level 2, a charming outdoor-style dining area where I can re-enter the complex.

the Dining Terrace

The Dining Terrace is a unique enclosed area with a glass ceiling. This design element provides an open-air feel, creating an ambiance that perfectly blends the comfort of indoor dining with the freshness of the outdoors.

3. Level 1

I went to level 1 around 11:00 a.m., and the shopping complex was already crowded. The shops here offer a diverse range of products, but there are fewer options for dining.

The central area of this level is the perfect spot for me to stand and watch the Lunar New Year decorations on the level below.

4. Level 2

Levels 1 and 2 are similar regarding the types of shops. On one end of the level 2, there’s G’rai, a local restaurant that offers tasty local food.

In the center of level two, you’ll find an elevator and a staircase that leads up to level three, also known as the Park level. This level is home to a theater but has yet to be opened.

5. Level 3 (Park Level)

Although the theater has yet to open, there are still plenty of things to see and eat on this level. Some of the notable names include Kenny Hill Bakers and Kanbe Ramen.

This level is mainly an open-air rooftop garden with a large playground for the kids called Play City.

It offers exciting and engaging challenges for toddlers and teens alike.

Level 3 (Park Level) play cave

(The play cave is a play space that allows kids to climb and explore. )

Level 3 (Park Level) water play

(The Water Play area is interactive and sensory, making it a hit with kids of all ages.)

There is a section of the park called Plaza Harmony, which features a well-manicured garden. This area provides one of the best angles to capture the majestic Exchange 106 building – Malaysia’s second-tallest building and Southeast Asia’s third-tallest building.

(If you feel thirsty, water fountains are strategically located throughout the park.)

(The Inspiration Garden )

The Inspiration Garden has an array of brightly colored flowers and beautifully shaped leaves to feast your eyes on.

Another park area is the forest walk, where you will find various plants with ethnobotanical uses. Torch ginger and cat’s whiskers are among some of the plants.

However, during my visit, this 10-acre rooftop park is not yet fully opened, as certain sections are still under construction.

Due to its open layout, the park can get very hot during the afternoon with limited shading. Therefore, mid-morning or late evening would be the best time to visit.

6. Back into the complex

After visiting the park, I returned to the complex and entered Seibu, a large department store that spans from the concourse to the top level.

Is it worth visiting the Exchange TRX?

After spending a few hours exploring every corner of the exchange TRX, it is worth a visit for anyone, whether you’re a local or foreign visitor, having a holiday in Kuala Lumpur. This new shopping complex stands out from other Malaysian shops with its unique rooftop garden, the only one of its kind in the country.

Aside from its rooftop garden, the Exchange TRX has an impressive array of international and local specialty shops. You’ll also find shops and eateries unique to this complex, with some being the first in Malaysia.

There is something for everyone, making it perfect for weekend outings. If you’re visiting Kuala Lumpur and looking for a place to shop and explore, the Exchange TRX is a must-visit place in your itinerary.

How to get there:

  • Getting to The Exchange TRX is easy if you’re driving. The complex is accessible from Jalan Tun Razak directly via the SMART Tunnel or straight from MEX and SPE from the elevated roadway. Clear road signs will lead you in different directions as you drive into the basement parking. The parking is cashless, which means you can use your credit card or e-wallet to pay for it. You’ll find ample parking in Basement 1 and 2.
  • If you’re looking for an easy way to get to The Exchange TRX, you can take the MRT. The MRT network is connected to The Tun Razak Exchange MRT station from all train lines. You can get off at Tun Razak Exchange station and exit to reach The Exchange TRX. Once you get off the MRT, all you need to do is take the elevator up one level, turn right into the pedestrian link, and find yourself inside the concourse level of the complex. Alternatively, turn left and take another elevator to the ground-level entrance.
