We took a break from our routine life in Malaysia recently to spend three weeks on the North Island, New Zealand, visiting our son and his family. On one of the days, we took a short trip from Auckland to explore Piha Beach, one of New Zealand’s most iconic stretches of coastline, and the nearby Kitekite Falls, which were among the activities we had planned during our stay.
If you’re looking for things to do in Piha, this beach and waterfall combo makes a perfect itinerary.

Getting to Piha Beach from Auckland
Piha is located on the west coast of New Zealand’s North Island, about 40 kilometers from Auckland, and the drive takes just 45 minutes. The road is scenic but winding, cutting through the lush rainforest of the Waitākere Ranges. If you’re planning a day trip from Auckland, driving is the most convenient option since public transportation is limited.

Lion Rock – The Icon of Piha
When we arrived, our first stop was the viewpoint overlooking Lion Rock, where we could take in a sweeping view of the beach. This volcanic remnant sits proudly between North and South Piha Beach, dividing the shoreline into two distinct sections.
From different angles, Lion Rock is said to resemble a crouching lion, though it does take a little imagination to see the resemblance!

Exploring Piha Beach
We walked down to the beach and were greeted by the black sand, the sea breeze, and the rhythmic sound of the waves. To the left of the beach lies a stretch of dramatic rock formations and rugged cliffs. This area is accessible only during low tide, so we had checked the tidal schedule beforehand. Otherwise, it would not have been possible to walk further left to reach the other beautiful landscapes.

One of the unique features of Piha is its shimmering black sand, formed by volcanic activity thousands of years ago. The strong winds lift the dry grains, sending them across the surface of the beach like rippling fabric drifting toward the sea. It is, in itself, a captivating sight.

Further along, we came across a striking rock passage where waves surged through, scattering into white sprays against the turquoise water. About fifty meters ahead lies the Gap, a natural channel where seawater rushes inward between towering rock walls.

The Blue Pool and Mussels
Near the Gap, there is a shallow tidal pool called the Blue Pool, which takes on a brilliant turquoise hue as it reflects the sea.

The surrounding rocks are covered with clusters of mussels. If you don’t mind the messy work of cleaning and cooking them, you could collect some for a fresh seafood dinner. Just remember to check local regulations before harvesting.

Hiking to Kitekite Falls
After exploring Piha Beach, we headed inland for the short Kitekite Falls hike. It is one of the highlights of the Waitākere Ranges. There is ample parking available at the entrance.

The trail leading there took us about 20 minutes to walk. It’s well-maintained, with wooden steps along steeper sections, and follows a stream as it winds uphill.
The walk is peaceful and suitable for almost any fitness level. Certain parts are not paved, but the path remains fairly flat and easy to follow. Wooden steps have been built in the steeper sections to make the climb more manageable.
The falls are a three-tiered cascade that plunges into a large pool at the base. When I reached the waterfall, it was a quiet afternoon with only a few other visitors around, which made the experience even more serene.

A Perfect Day at Piha Beach and Beyond
We thoroughly enjoyed our day trip from Auckland to Piha Beach and Kitekite Falls. From the rugged coastline and volcanic black sand beaches to the peaceful forest trails and waterfalls, it was a refreshing escape from city life. We also visited another beach where gannets migrate each year from Australia to New Zealand to breed. This place is called Muriwai Beach, and it is well worth a visit. We plan to write another article about it, as we have just returned from spending another half day there.
As many of you know, hiking and traveling are among our greatest passions. My next big adventure is one I’ve been looking forward to for a long time: trekking to Everest Base Camp at the beginning of October with my elder brother and another hiking enthusiast friend.
Until then, I hope this Piha Beach guide inspires you to explore more of New Zealand’s natural beauty.
