Hiking to Kem T-Rock at Gasing Hill: A New Viewpoint with Free Coffee and City Views

Gasing Hill has been a favourite hiking spot for many locals in Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya for years. On my recent visit to Gasing Hill, I discovered Kem T-Rock, a new viewpoint that many hikers are now visiting.

In this guide, I’ll share the route I took from the Gasing Hill entrance, what to expect along the way, and the return route that brings you back via the famous Gasing Hill suspension bridge.

I visited Gasing Hill on a Saturday, and as usual, it was packed with hikers. From the Gasing Hill entrance, the shortest route to Kem T-Rock is to take the first left trail after the entrance, which goes uphill.

The first section is a short incline, and it is the same trail that leads towards the famous suspension bridge. After the climb, you will reach a fork in the trail.

The trail on the right leads towards the Fence Trail, but for Kem T-Rock, continue straight ahead.

After this point, the trail becomes relatively flat and comfortable.

What I enjoy about hiking at Gasing Hill is that the trail is mature and well-maintained. The main paths are clear and easy to follow, making it suitable even for hikers who are visiting for the first time.

Along the way, you will pass a small hut. This is a good place to take a short break because it is shaded and away from the busier sections of the trail.

However, many smaller trails branch out from the main path. If you are unfamiliar with Gasing Hill, I recommend staying on the main trail because some of these smaller paths can be confusing.

Using a hiking app such as Komoot or AllTrails is useful, especially if you are visiting Gasing Hill for the first time.

After a small climb, you will reach the first major resting point on the way to Kem T-Rock.

On weekends, there is usually someone selling ice cream here. It is a good place to stop for a drink, cool down, and take a short break before continuing. Payment can be made using Touch 'n Go.

From the ice cream stall, turn left and continue along the trail.

After this point, the route becomes mostly flat. About five minutes later, you will arrive at another important junction.

At this junction, there is usually another ice cream seller, although they were not there during my visit.

From here, there are two routes you can take to reach Kem T-Rock.

Option 1: Via the Suspension Bridge Route

Turn left towards the suspension bridge and cross it. Continue uphill to a small peak, then follow the trail for about another minute before taking a left turn downhill.

The trail will lead you to a wooden bridge, which marks the final approach to Kem T-Rock.

Option 2: The Shorter Route to Kem T-Rock

Take the right fork uphill for the shorter route to Kem T-Rock.

For this hike, I chose the right fork because it was the fastest way to reach the viewpoint.

After about five to seven minutes of slow uphill walking, you will arrive at another resting point with a T-junction.

Turning left will take you towards the suspension bridge, while continuing straight leads you along a quieter trail towards Kem T-Rock.

This trail runs parallel to the Stairway to Heaven trail and is a quieter section of the Gasing Hill hiking route.

The final section requires another uphill climb.

The trail takes about five minutes to reach the viewpoint. Although it is not a long climb, some sections are slightly steep and can become slippery after rain, so take your time and be careful.

Ropes are attached to the trees along the steeper sections to provide support and make the climb easier and safer.

And finally, you will arrive at Kem T-Rock, the newest viewpoint at Gasing Hill.

Kem T-Rock is a relatively new addition to the Gasing Hill hiking trail.

When I visited this area about a year ago, there was nothing like this here. The place was developed by a group of hiking enthusiasts who wanted to create a comfortable resting spot for fellow hikers.

What impressed me most about Kem T-Rock was the hospitality offered to visitors. On Saturdays and Sundays, they provide free coffee, fried snacks, and refreshments for hikers.

Visitors are welcome to contribute if they wish to support their efforts.

There are plenty of bamboo and wooden benches where hikers can relax, enjoy a drink, and take a break before continuing their journey.

They have also built a viewing platform facing the city, where hikers can enjoy a wide view of the surrounding area.

After enjoying coffee, snacks, and a good rest, it was time for me to continue my hike and head back.

For the return journey, I took a different route to complete the loop back to the entrance.

The way down is slightly more challenging because it is mostly downhill, and some sections are steep. From here, follow the trail downhill until you reach a small stream with a wooden bridge.

After crossing the bridge, there is a short climb of about two minutes before reconnecting with the main trail.

At the main trail:

  • Turn left to go towards the Stairway to Heaven.
  • Turn right to continue towards the Gasing Hill suspension bridge.

After about 100 steps, you will reach another resting area. At this junction, take the left trail downhill to reach the suspension bridge.

This point is easy to recognise because there is a Gardenia bread signboard erected beside the trail.

The Gasing Hill suspension bridge can become crowded, especially on weekends, because it is a one-way crossing. You may need to wait for your turn before crossing.

After crossing the suspension bridge, the remaining walk is relatively easy. The trail is mostly flat and takes around 10 to 15 minutes.

Eventually, you will return to the Y-junction where the route splits towards Kem T-Rock and the suspension bridge.

Looking back at the map, the route I took formed an anticlockwise loop:

  1. Start from the Gasing Hill entrance.
  2. Walk towards Kem T-Rock using the shorter uphill route.
  3. Return via the suspension bridge.
  4. Continue back to the main entrance.

This loop allows you to experience both the new Kem T-Rock viewpoint and the iconic suspension bridge at Gasing Hill.

Kem T-Rock is a welcome addition to the Gasing Hill hiking trail.  It combines a pleasant hiking experience with a comfortable resting area, free coffee and snacks, and a beautiful city view.

The trail is not extremely difficult, but it does require some uphill walking. With proper footwear, enough water, and a hiking app for navigation, it is a hike that most recreational hikers can enjoy, provided they are comfortable with some uphill sections.

This is a trail I would recommend if you are looking for a short hike near Kuala Lumpur or Petaling Jaya.
