Shah Alam Community Forest, located in Shah Alam, Selangor, Malaysia, is a hidden gem for hikers looking to escape the city and immerse themselves in nature. The forest’s most popular attractions are Mirror Lake and Sapu Tangan Hill, offering a mix of serene waterscapes and challenging climbs.
Even hiking just to these two destinations is physically demanding. A round trip can take around four hours, especially if you stop to rest, take photos, or enjoy the scenery. This hike is not for beginners without preparation, as the trails are uneven, partially unmarked, and occasionally obstructed.
However, reaching Mirror Lake, with its tranquil blue waters and peaceful surroundings, makes every step worthwhile. Whether you’re a first-time hiker or an experienced adventurer, this guide will walk you step by step through the trail, sharing my personal experiences, navigation tips, and everything you need to know for a successful hike.

Overview of the Shah Alam Forest Trail
The trail to Mirror Lake and Sapu Tangan Hill is a mix of terrain, including:
- Dirt tracks
- Uneven forest paths
- Narrow jungle trails
- Rocky sections requiring climbing
The total elevation gain is about 300 meters, making the hike moderately strenuous. Hikers should have reasonable stamina and leg strength.
The round-trip distance for visiting both attractions is roughly 8 kilometers, so plan accordingly. Even though the forest trails are natural and untouched, the reward is incredible: calm lakes, forest sounds, and scenic hilltops.

How to Get to Shah Alam Community Forest
The forest is best accessed by car, as there is no public transport to the trailheads.
There are three trailheads: A, B, and C. The recommended starting point is Trailhead C, due to its large official parking lot and convenient access.
Why Choose Trailhead C:
- Official parking area (safe and free)
- Avoids the risk of illegal parking fines
- Direct access to the main trail toward Mirror Lake
Trail Entrances: A, B, and C
Entrance C (Recommended)

Entrance C is the most friendly starting point. The large parking area makes it easy to start your hike without hassle.
GPS coordinates: 3.1332260043035136, 101.47543057008473
Entrance A

Entrance A is along a narrow lane next to Setia Arundina, Setia Eco Park. Parking is limited, and the surroundings can be confusing for first-time hikers.
GPS coordinates: 3.1214970032506764, 101.47656321196615
Entrance B
Entrance B is less documented, and I have not personally explored it. It may be an internal junction or a smaller entry point, often used on longer loop trails. I will update this section once I have more details.
Trail Navigation and Risk of Getting Lost
Shah Alam Community Forest features a complex network of trails that often crisscross like a cobweb.
Trail markers are limited, usually only indicating Mirror Lake or Peak Garden. Most junctions have little or no signage.

Navigation tips:
- Use a hiking app like Komoot or AllTrails
- First-time hikers should go with someone familiar with the trail or hike on weekends when more people are around
- Be aware of blocked paths due to fallen rocks or construction
Even with technology, some paths can be unclear or obstructed, so always pay attention and be prepared for improvisation.
The Actual Hiking Route

From Entrance C, the trail starts with a gradual walk through lush forest. At a relaxed pace, it takes about 1.5 hours to reach Mirror Lake.
After hiking here more than once, I realized that the easiest way to start from Entrance C, whether you are heading to Mirror Lake or Suburban Hill, is to follow the Kurma Trail. The path is wide, clear, and easy to navigate.

The route from Mirror Lake to Sapu Tangan Hill is steeper, less maintained, and less used. I attempted it with my hiking app, but the path was unclear and overgrown, forcing me to turn back. After that, I headed back to Station B. From there, I followed the main trail, passing by Station B1 and Station A, before making my way up to Sapu Tangan Hill.
Rest spots along the trail:
First rest spot: Recognizable by wandering chickens and dogs, with a blue table

Second rest spot: Features a table with a red shelter and a Malaysian flag

Unexpected Issues on the Trail

Be prepared for obstacles such as:
- Blocked trails due to construction
- Large fallen rocks, requiring climbing
- Muddy and slippery sections
- Shallow flowing water in some parts
Some trails are narrow and undefined, so proceed with caution and watch your footing.
Mirror Lake
The water is so calm and still, and from here I can clearly see that soft bluish tint across the surface. It is really beautiful. Someone has placed a simple bench made from a tree log, and it is such a lovely little corner to rest and just take in the scenery.
You can spot a few people kayaking quietly across the lake, yet the place still feels incredibly peaceful. The tall trees surrounding the area provide plenty of shade, so the air feels cool and comfortable. It is the kind of spot where you naturally slow down and simply enjoy being present.
There is also a small stall nearby selling drinks. Just keep in mind that there are no restroom facilities here.

Sapu Tangan Hill
Now, here at Sapu Tangan Hill, the view is not as striking as Mirror Lake, but getting here carries its own meaning. After the steady climb, arriving at this point feels like a small personal victory.
There is a tower here that looks a little abandoned, and it is not open for climbing.

Difficulty Level: Who Should Hike

This trail suits beginners, solo hikers, and families, but only with preparation.
- Beginners: Focus on Mirror Lake only
- Solo hikers: Must be confident in navigation
- Families: Stick to easier sections to avoid safety risks
The full round trip involves 8 km with 300 meters of elevation, so water, snacks, and stamina are essential.
Facilities are Lacking

Facilities at Shah Alam Community Forest are limited:
- No toilets inside the forest
- No major food stalls
- Small private stall near Mirror Lake (drinks and ice cream, not always open)
- Official parking only at Entrance C
Tips:
- Use the restroom at the nearby petrol stations before starting
- Bring enough water and snacks for the hike
What to Prepare Before You Go
Essential items:
- Hiking app (Komoot/AllTrails) + fully charged phone
- Enough water to stay hydrated
- Proper hiking footwear
- Start early to avoid midday heat
- Snacks for energy
- Sun and insect protection: long sleeves, hat, sunscreen, insect repellent
- Optional gear: lightweight umbrella or raincoat
Best Time to Hike
- Travel from Kuala Lumpur: ~45 minutes
- Start before 7:30 a.m. for cooler temperatures and manageable daylight
- Weekends are better for first-timers (more people to ask directions)
- Weekdays offer solitude, but ensure you know the trail well
Final Thoughts: Is It Worth It?
Mirror Lake is the most scenic highlight with striking blue water, occasional kayakers, and a bench made from a tree log for resting.
Sapu Tangan Hill offers a different experience. While not as picturesque, reaching the summit provides a strong sense of accomplishment.
For those who love challenging trails, new experiences, and forest adventures, Shah Alam Community Forest is definitely worth a visit.
